SITE UPDATE-18

V.18-HEY! IT'S TIME!!! It's a new year...well....not yet. We still have a minute. But, I had to do all the updates before 2014 so that when the year changes the updates are there. Here's what I did for the small but large update:

• The New Update Blog!
• Well, it's not totally new. It all looks the same. The only thing that changed was the way I'll post updates. This is exactly what I did to the Site Changes...Site in update 12.7.1122. So, now I just post an update as it's own post instead of an ever continuing post. And then I use the archive links in the sidebar to organize the post in the menu and what not. It's a much better way to post. I should have done it when I changed the Site Update...Site and the Main Site.
• Speaking of the Main Site!
• There are a few new changes and updates that happened of the last month. 
• The big new change was the Facebook comments.
• I FINALLY FIXED THEM!! Ever since I added them, they had the problem that I mentioned in update 15 and 17. I wanted them to auto detect the URL the comments where on. The comments need a URL to work. So, I set it to the Main Site. The bad thing is that since it has the same URL for everything, every comment appeared...everywhere! I had to leave a note above the comments to tell you to say what page you were on. Well, the problem is over. With some hefty research, I found out how to fix it. I just had to set the HTML code into a JS code which allowed me to use " + window.location.href + " to get the URL from whatever page the comments are on. Thus, solving the problem. • Moving on to the next thing, I updated the MY VIDEOS page. 
• It was behind a year. As in, I didn't have the year 2013 in the YEARS SELECTOR! So, I added the playlist in there and even added 2014 in case I forgot!
• And of course, all the playlist updates means I need to have my YouTube Playlists...up to date.
• So I went through them all add made sure that had the proper videos and then added the new 2014 playlists. Everything all good to go.
• The last thing for the Main Site ONLY is updating the menu.
• I added ALL the 2014 things ahead of time.
• The Update Blog's posts, the Site Changes posts, and the Monthly Video Updates are all added are just need links. Well, only the Monthly Video Updates need links.
• Everything is all ready to go for a seamless transition into a new year.
• CONTACT FORMS!!!
• Across all my Blogger sites, there is this new section in the sidebar. Blogger added a new contact form that lets you directly send me a message to my email. It's an awesome new tool. If you have a problem or idea or just want to say hi, you can easily do so. You just need to have an email. I start this out on just my blog to see how things go. After a good test run I decided it needed to be everywhere!
• Speaking of my blog!
• I adjusted the width of the site again. I had this problem since update 14, where not matter what I did, I couldn't get rid of the bottom scroll bar when my blog was displaying on my blog. It was too wide and wouldn't go away. I couldn't really solve the problem because my little laptop couldn't handle the Blogger template editor. But since I added the new favicons at the bottom of every site, I can test it now. The favicon opens the corresponding site in a new window that's adjusted to be the size of my laptops screen. And I try to make my sites fit perfectly in that screen. So, I opened my blog in that window and then went to the template editor and was able to play with the width. After a little bit of tweaking, I got it right and the bottom bar was gone. I had to change a few things in the sidebar like titles and other words to fit better in the smaller space. At the end of the day, it's all good and it looks great.
• And the "Latest Photo" Facebook thing was still linking to Photobucket...oops. So, I changed it to just my main Flickr page. But then I realized that I have updating slide shows of what I upload. So, I don't really need another latest photo section. So, I removed it.
• The copyrights section!
• I reworked the copyright sections across all the sites. My name in there is now a link to my blogger profile and I moved them all to the bottom of the sites. Some had it in the sidebar, but I wanted it to be at the bottom with all the other codes and things. Most places have the copyrights at the bottom anyways.
• Lastly for the main changes, search boxes!
• I added search boxes to all sites that didn't have one or that need one. 
• Also, the Christmas Music player and links have been removed from all sites. The time has past. But I left the lights because they are cool. :-P
• I changed the Hover Warnings AGAIN! I think it's good now. I did a width check and loaded my Main Site in the special window that loads when click on the footer favicons. I noticed that the warnings were being covered by the Floating Quick Links. So, I used the left hover mode inside of the center hover mode. Now, it's all good.

Time for the behind the scenes things.

• The end of the year back up.
• At the end of every year, I go through my codes on my hard drive and in Google Drive and update them. Like my hover warnings, I did that big update to them and didn't save the code in the proper spot. I have everything organized. And not only do I save the codes, but I copy the WHOLE HTML codes from the sites and save them too. And lastly, Blogger lets you export or back up a blog as in XML file. I download them all and save them as well. I had lost so many things from computer crashes or other problems. I like to make sure if I lose something, I can add it back.
• EXPERIMENTS!!
• I'm always looking into things like how my sites load and work and I try to make them work as best as possible. Most of my efforts go to the Main Site. I did a little test. My Main Site loads realllllyyyy slow on my laptop. I went three days without loading it and then randomly loaded it. It took 21m:15s to load. I timed it. Like.....WHAT! Then, I closed it out and loaded it again 30 seconds later. It took a minute. Then, I took out the menu and it loaded in 30 seconds. I put the menu back, it took a minute. So, just the menu added double the load time. I did this menu/no menu test on the big computer and it did the same. 10 seconds, 5 seconds. It's better than back in the day. My site would load at all on the little laptop. No matter what. I don't know how I did it back in the day. I always refining things and making it all better.
• The last experiment I did was with Github. Github lets you share and edit codes as a community. I wanted to see if it could host my codes. I have seen other people using it. And well... it didn't work. I added the menus .CSS code and Github lets you get the raw code and just a page. Like the way the code is now. Both pages look the same, but I guess the URL just isn't good enough for the menu. So, the whole experiment was a fail. I'll keep trying though.
• Finally, MORE RESEARCH!!
• This update had solutions to many of my sites long term issues. But one still eludes me... The menu overlapping issue. Since the dawn of time, in updates 12.7.1122, 15.5.1551, and 16, the menu has had the overlapping problem where the list of on section will be blocked by the section it came out of. I EXTENSIVELY looked into this problem again. I had done this before and found most of my solutions. Like the Facebook comments. That wouldn't have been solve if someone else didn't have the same issue and put it up on a forum or question site for some to solve. And then the people that solve the issue are amazing and everything wouldn't happen without them. I'm not smart with anything codes and stuff. I'm a very thankful for those who have solved the problems for me to come by and take and learn. I look into every solution to see how they did it and learn how to do it myself in the future. However, this did not pay off for the overlapping issue. I looked though many places, on the page where I got the menu, in the forums, and found people having the same problem, but no one ever answers with a solution. I even found other people with the menu I use and they have the overlapping issue on their sites too. So, I have just assumed that it's an unsolvable issue. I did find a way to have more than one of the same menu on the site. So, that might be a solution and I'll have to spread the links out so they never get to the edge of the screen and cause the overlapping issue. It's a work in progress. We'll see how things work.

So, that's all. A nice update to bring in the new year. Be sure to use the new contact things in the sidebars. I'm actually really happy about that. I have always wanted a way for anyone to directly give me feedback. Things are getting better as time moves on. Hopefully this year will be a good year for me and I do things with my life. Wednesday, December 4th, 2013- Ok, the last update video of the year has been uploaded. It's a long one too. It's that time of the year to set down and think about what I did this year and what next for the new year arriving. I said that 2014 is my year. To go out and do things. Get a job and move out....hopefully. There aren't any BIG changes to anything next year. I'm just updating anything behind on my sites and in my Youtube Playlists. There will be a few other changes, though. It's been a good year for me. Sure I'm stuck in a hole in my brain, but I'm happy.

SITE UPDATE-17.7.1771

V.1.7.1771- It's that time of the year!!! IT'S CHRISTMAS TIME!! So, just for fun and celebration, I put lights up on my sites and it snows! Well...only my Blogger sites. They are the only ones that are easy to edit and are right in front of me. I would do my membership site, but there's a problem. The reason way it's getting out of date is because Webs site editor won't load for me. I still could work on the pages and I will for 2014. But, I can't update the sidebar things, which is where I put the codes for the snow and lights. Sorry membership site. You can still go see the using the icons and the bottom of the site. You might have to maximize the window to get the best effect. 
I went with lights at the bottom of my sites. Last year, I had them all on the top except the main site. The floating things interfered with it. But now all the sites have floating things. The lights still worked at the top. They went behind everything. But, I liked them at the bottom. As for the snow, there wasn't anything changed. The color of the snow depends on what site, and the amount of snow too. I had to turn it down on my blog because it slowed the place down. That's why there is no snow on the main site again. I did add it, and it worked way better than last year. This shows that my refinements and load testing are working, but it still was a bit slow. So, I still cut it out. Sorry main site. Moving on, there is on big new thing this year. MUSIC!! CHRISTMAS TIME MUSIC!! The playlist of songs isn't that great. It was hard to find good ones. But the way I did it was new. I'm testing a new window...thing. It's not a normal new window. It's one that opens just on the site and inside the site itself. It's quite cool. The window is close-able and it can minimize. However, it is a bit buggy. It works on all sites, but on some, it has to go in the sidebar. Then, that makes the other problems. When the loader is in the top bar on sites that work, it loads in the middle of the screen. When it's in the sidebar, it loads in the middle of the sidebar. But, it's a good thing it's MOVABLE!! Also, when it minimized from the sidebar, it disappears. But, if you scroll down a bit, it's there. I'll work out the issues over time. In fact, right after I typed this...I found the solution... :-D But if you are having problems, I made a back up link for the music player that loads in just a new window. It uses the favicons window loading code. Another good thing, both work in other browsers. I tried it in Firefox and Internet Explorer 9 and they did load a bit slow, but they work.Well...this was a bigger update than I thought, but that's all. If you are looking around, you can see new things already being added or changed for the end of the year update. Things are coming into place. See you in a month.

Sunday, November 17th, 2013 at 12:00 p.m.- Today is a big storm day. I woke up to a PDS Tornado watch being issued that ended just to our west. But now, as of an hour ago, we are in one too. There is a line of storms forming. The first storm that popped up had an instant warning and there a large rain wrapped tornado confirmed. I have everything ready for the worst. This is the real deal. I'm having flashbacks to Oct. 24th 2001. I'll continue this post later, but I made a document in Google Drive that you can go to. I'll type as things happen there and you can see it update live. I have wanted to do this and this is the test run. CLICK HERE to go to the doc.

SITE UPDATE-17.5.1750

V.17.5.1750-This is a preparation update. I'm getting things ready for V.18 which is my new years update. I'm getting started early so that I get things done properly and not rush. You'll see things start to slowly change. Like my Facebook comments. I finally found a solution for the problem they had from the beginning. I'm still testing to see if everything works. That's why you see a change happen, but I don't immediately announce it. I put things though many tests to make sure they won't fail, or I want to make sure I'm getting the best out of the thing by adding more to the code and refining things. All this is to prevent a bunch of small updates for little things. I like my new bulk update style. Just put all the small ones into a big update. Anyways, expect one more update before V.18. That is for the return of the Christmas lights and snow effects. It snowed once so far. I like to break out the Christmas things on December 1st, so look for the update then. Finally after that, you'll see 2014 things appear in the menu and other places and then they'll slowly get filled in. See, you in two weeks.

Update Blog...Update-11-4-13

Monday, November 4th, 2013- Today, my main site went over 10,000 views. And my blog went over 3,000. Of course, that's not a lot, and it has been four years. This is not including the old site though. When I made the new Main Site in 2010, I did it in a way that I lost all the views from the old Main Site. I learned a new way to update things and keep the views when I re-vamped my blog. Instead of creating a new site, building it, and then launch it by re-naming the old site URL to something else and then naming the new site to the old's, I just created a temp site with the old URL, named the old something else, and then re-built it. After all that, I name it back to the original URL and the temp site is deleted. That way, I keep my old views. But, I didn't think that through. So, I would have an extra 232 views....which isn't that much neither. Weird. I didn't know my old main didn't get that much. So...yeah, this was a crazy rabbit trail post. I just want to say thanks. Looking at where the view are coming from, I see they are from Stumble Upon or other places that you click a button and you get a random site. They aren't coming from my blog, or my YouTube channel. Hmmm...weird.

On my official blog, I made special post about my Boots the making of this weeks POTW. On October 11th and the following days, I made updates on the whole story and what I was doing. Well, it's time to show you. CLICK HERE to see it and prepare yourself. I do recommend seeing the video I worked really hard on. It's the ending cinematic video to everything that happened. Oh no.

On the 11th at 1:00 PM, I found my Boots ALMOST dead. She fought it for 6 hours. And then at 7:00 PM, she was gone. I'm working on a special video because I documented the whole thing. Stay tuned. The video will be uploaded to The Father's Channel. There's not going to be a storm video on Monday. There's going to be nothing until I feel OK and the video is done. There will be a POTW though. I need to rest for a bit. However...I couldn't sleep. This morning at 9:00 AM I did go see her and I'm halfway done with the video. It's going to be a long one. And now, on 10-15-13, I have all the videos edited and are saving. I explain it all here.

SITE UPDATE-17.5

V.17.5- This update refines what I did in Version 17, but also adds a few new things. It's not too big, here's what I did:

• New follow/quick link buttons.
• Across all my sites on Blogger, I added this new FOLLOW buttons above the floating shares at the top of the sites.
• They are all quick links to my main profiles, expect for the Twitter one. It's the only actual follow button.
• I was getting tired of the jumpy crazy ones on the main site from Version 10.
• Even more changes to the Hover Warnings.
• I didn't change that much, I just removed the mentioning of the bottom bar.
• It's time to move on. But then I wanted to see have a way to get to the post. I like that rant I did. So, I put it as a link in the little menu that pop-up menu under the HELP PAGE link.
• That menu still doesn't like to say opened when the Warnings are in hover mode.
• I'm working hard to get that to work properly.
• I also saved loads of different version of the Warnings.
• I save all my codes in Google Drive and also on my Hard Drive. So, in Google I made a few different Warnings. Like, one with just the right column which is the one right now, one with just the left column, one with the hidden pop-up one etc.
• Just so I have them ready for any need I...need.
• I still keep moving around internal codes.
• At the bottom of my sites, either hidden in the copyright or in a whole hidden element, is where all my .JS and .CSS codes are.
• Not all of them are there. There are others that are with the elements they do to, but the main ones are down there. The ones for the hover things and pop-up things.
• Well, they codes have their home now.
• In Version 17, I added favicons at the bottom of all the sites. And on the main site, that element was being overlapped but the hidden element for all the codes. So...I thought....What if I just put hidden codes in the favicon's element. BOOM!! It worked.
• On most of my sites, I had the extra codes hiding in the copyright element. So, I took them out of there and put them in the favicons element.
• And thus, it's all at the bottom of the site, where they should be to improve loading.
• Updated the Shares on the Old Menu Site.
• On the Old Menu site, I just had normal share buttons in the side bar like the ones under the posts on most of the sites. Including this one. Well, I put the floating shares on there now. Gives you more options are looks like all the other sites when I added the new Floating Follows.
• A new technique for photos.
• On my pictures, I have a set height and width that photos go by. Whenever I changed a picture or the size, I had to figure out or guess the right size.
• Well, when updating the Scrolling News section in the side bar with the new 2013 storm video, I noticed I only had the width and no height. I remembered that you only need one and the picture will adjust itself.
• So, I used this new way on the POTW and Random Video pictures in the side bar.
• The POTW picture was always having in issue with it fitting in the side bar, which is why I made it smaller in Version 17.
• Now, I have a solution.
• I also used it in the menu.
• The POTW there was always out of proportions because I had to guess.
• Now, I have a solution for that, too.
• The solutions are always in front of my face.

And there we go. Just a quick refinement of things. I like finding solutions that I already have found. That's what Version 17 was. This update really focused on that update. I just like to make sure that the new things that I add are working at their best.

SITE UPDATE-17

V.17- This was a big one. I keep a list of things that I do...and it's long. At least, it looks long to me. More than the usual small updates that have been happening lately. Here's what I did:

• Re-dined the inner code of the Hover Warnings.
• If you didn't know, the Hover Warnings are the red float text that is at the top of the Main Site when you scroll past them.
• I re-worked the codes inside it.
• I tested them on my blog once. Just to see what I could so with them. And it worked...but the title of the blog at the top of the page floated with the text. Because the code was set to <header>, anything with <header> floated...like the title.
• Well, I went through the code and named all the <header>'s <header111>. And now, there's no conflict. PERFECT!
• Next, I moved the .JS codes where the HTML codes are.
• The .JS codes where at the bottom over the site with all the other ones. I moved them into the hover warning element itself. 
• I was seeing if it'll fix the random loading issues. It seems to have worked.
• And lastly, I integrated the Hover Menus into it.
• For a while now, I have had this Hover Menu test on the Test Site. All you see is a link. But when you hover on the link, a menu pop up. It's very cool.
• Well, while re-working the warning's code, I realized...There's more than one Help Page. And the Help link in the Warnings just goes to menu of the pages. So, I thought...Why not just use the Hover Menu for that.....BOOM!!! IT CLICKED!! 
• So, I tested it and worked wonderfully. And now, after being on the Test Site for a LONG TIME, the Hover Menu was finally added and it's default test removed.
• It is a bit buggy though. The menu opens fine when the Warnings are at the top of the site and not hovering. But in hover mode, the menu closes when you try to go for it.
• It helps to hover over the word "HELP" and quick move the mouse into the menu.

That's it for that. Wow. That was a lot. Now it's on to the small things.

• I learned the art of image mapping.
• If you don't know with that is, it's when you put multiple links on a single image.
• You'll see on Sunday when the first storm week starts. ;-)
• Favicons.
• At the bottom of all the sites, you'll see nine little pictures. Those are the favicons from ALL my Blogger sites. I forgot to add the membership site. The Membership Site is like lost now. It's behind and hasn't been touch in a while. I'll have to work on that.
• Anyways, those aren't just pictures...they are links! They go to the site the correspond too. And not only that, they are special links.
• They open in the new window that is a specific width and height. That width and height also happens to be the size of my little laptop's screen.
• If you didn't know, I made most of my sits on my old little laptop. The sites are made to fit in it's screen. Other sites like Weather.com and Facebook fit perfectly in my screen and many others. So, I made that the minimal width of my sites. They all fit in without a bottom scroll bar.
• So, now I can test if things fit or not without my laptop. It's tiny, slow, and has a hard time loading the sites....in fact...any site.
• And then...I realized something while testing them on the Test Site before I pop them in.
• I had this test called Player Width Test.
• It was a link that opened up a video in a set window size....see where I'm going here.
• When I made the Favicons Width Test, I used a totally different code using JavaScript that took me a while to research and code. So I was like... I DID ALL THAT WORK FOR NOTHING!! I HAD THE CODE RIGHT IN MY FACE THE WHOLE TIME!!! Well, all is not lost. The Player test used HTML. Simpler and easy. So, now I have a Java one and an HTML one. Like what I did with the IMPORTANT NEWS banner.
• So, I used the HTML Favicons. But the Java one is still on the test site, too.
• Oh, and I reverted the favicons back to their old selves.  The new ones just didn't look right. I'll have to work on them. I also made the Test Site's favicon completely black and white instead of a faded version of the Main Site's favicon.
• A new hover image technique.
• On my blog, I do this test that lets you compare with original picture with the edited one just by hovering over it.
• Well, I simplified it's code. I might use it in other places. I'm thinking about it.
• Changed the Better Way to View width back to 1024.
• At the top of the Main Site, I let you know that the site is made for a specific width. I changed it to 1154 and don't know why. Well, I put it back to 1024 because that's the width of my laptop and I have to new way of testing if things fit with the Favicons at the bottom of the sites.
• Changed the name of the Free Rider section.
• In the menu. It was called "Free Rider 2 Tracks". And since I updated to Free Rider 3, I just took out the number since the codes work for both games.
• Did a little adjusting in the Side Bar.
• I made the POTW picture a little smaller. It fits better.
• I messed with the Facebook comments.
• I just want the comments to show on the page people comment on. If you comment, it goes to all the pages because the code is set to one URL. I didn't have this much trouble with the Disqus comments.
• I tried to add links to the Back-Up site.
• Like what I had before the menu. Just a row of links. And then I thought...I could but a hover menu on each link and make a little menu thing. But I didn't work. I guess I'll just have to add them as normal links.
• And lastly, I cleaned up the test site.
• I finally integrated two tests that have been on the site for a long time. So, I removed their default tests. And I removed a few others that I tested and wouldn't work, but keep them there for a future EUREKA moment.

Wow, that's all. That was a lot. I like a good sized update. There was one more thing, I began plans for New Year's 2014. Like changes I want to start and what not. As in, Update the Membership site, back-up all the codes, etc. Just getting a head start and making plans. It's good to have plans.
